As much as the gang at The Amazing Blog love this capital of ours and all it has to offer, sometimes we crave a bit of distance from the crowds of tourists, the pollution and the overcrowded roads that come hand in hand with living in London. And with spring in full flourish and the idea of beer gardens and picnics no longer a distant dream, we’re planning on spending all of April embracing the early onset of summer.
And while I’m lucky enough to be heading to Parisian shores tonight for a long weekend, on my return I’ll be heading down to my favourite sea-side town, Brighton & Hove, for their fabulous Food & Drink Festival. The largest of its kind in the south of England, it runs for ten days throughout April kicking off on March 30th and with local producers, growers, restaurants, bars and food retailers firmly at its heart, it’s a showcase of the fantastic food, drink and hospitality to be found in Sussex and the surrounding areas.
As a born and bred Sussex girl, and having spent four years at uni in Brighton, I can certainly account for the benefits of getting a bit of sea breeze into one’s system, and with the added bonus of some yummy food and drink, it’s a perfect excuse to visit the coast for a weekend away.
The myriad of food stalls is accompanied by a number of events over the ten days starting with the Sussex Beer Festival at Pub du Vin, followed by the Sussex Gourmet Bus Tour on a vintage Routemaster bus and a programme of fun suppers, tastings, markets, cooking demonstrations and competitions, including the Great Brighton Cake Bake Off.
Friday 6th and Saturday 7th April, just before Easter Sunday, brings the Big Sussex Market and Live Food Show, the centrepiece of the festival, which is run in the city's trendy North Laine and Brighton Dome complex and is free for the public to drop in and enjoy. This year, it will include a Children's Food Festival including chefs from CBeebies 'I Can Cook', a community food area and the finals of the Brighton Mini Mix Off cocktail competition.
So whether you’re a foodie in search of something new to tickle your taste buds, or want an excuse to drink beer in the sunshine, head down to Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival – the perfect spring break!
