Micheline Arcier : Harmonie Aromatherapie Body Oil

When feeling tired or listless, at The Amazing Blog, it’s always aromatherapy that we turn to first. We believe there is no better way to relax and unwind, than by using the healing powers of botanicals. Did you know that the term ‘aromatherapy’ was first coined by a French perfumer and chemist, René-Maurice Gattefossé, in his book published in 1937? Today we want to talk about one of our favourite ‘go-to’ aromatherapy brands, the award-winning Micheline Arcier and their Harmonie Aromatherapie Body Oil which won Best Body Oil - Relaxing at the 2022 Beauty Shortlist Awards.

Micheline Arcier was one of the first British aromatherapy brands to launch in the UK. As an early advocate of holistic wellbeing, Micheline Arcier developed exclusive products and signature massage techniques. In the early 1960s. She had a highly successful and well-regarded private practice and clinic in Knightsbridge, London. While her practice has since closed, the brand lives on through the Micheline Arcier products. She was trained by Madame Maury, an Austrian biochemist who believed in the use of essential oils to promote wellbeing. Micheline Arcier also worked closely with Dr Jean Valnet, one of the first doctors to use essential oils to treat medical conditions, and when she first opened her Knightsbridge clinic, few people knew what aromatherapy was. Over six decades, the Aromatherapie range has evolved and even offers training to ensure that the official Micheline Arcier practices are carefully maintained. While Micheline Arcier passed away in 2006, Germaine Riche and Catherine Milne have since taken ownership of the brand. Germaine Riche was trained by Micheline Arcier herself and became qualified as an aromatherapist in 1968. Today Germaine also teaches courses on aromatherapy in both the UK and Japan. Catherine Milne works as both an aromatherapist and sports massage practitioner and founded Aromasporttherapy. Today Micheline Arcier Aromatherapie is now under the umbrella of Aromasporttherapy Limited, which is also the parent company of Pepperfit. All essential oils used in Micheline Arcier products are genuine and pure oils sourced from suppliers that support organic production. Products all have naturally sourced ingredients, are vegan friendly and are not tested on animals. These active plant-based essential oils are so powerful that they must be blended with vegetable carrier oils. This gives the oils added benefits by offering vitamins and antioxidants and helps stimulate the production of healthy skin cells, neutralise free radicals that age the skin, and protect the skin against pollutants.

The Harmonie Aromatherapie Body Oil has been created to help promote deep relaxation and a restful night’s sleep, working on both the body and mind. What we love about this oil is that it nourishes the skin, and relieves tension, while offering a wonderful sense of calm with its subtle, yet moreish scent. Incorporating healing essential oils, it’s best used after a bath, while the skin is warm and clean for the oil to absorb fully. The carrier oil is apricot kernel; it’s a nonfragrant oil with skin-soothing and antioxidant properties. It’s combined here with the essential oils of linaloe wood, petitgrain, sage, chamomile flower and ylang-ylang.

Linaloe wood oil is native to Mexico; it’s known for its rejuvenating properties, which stimulate tissue regeneration and help prevent skin ageing. It calms and clears the mind, has been used in perfumes, incense, and oils for centuries, and is also said to be an aphrodisiac! Petitgrain originates from Paraguay and is sourced from the leaves and twigs from the Seville bitter orange tree. It’s a powerful anti-inflammatory soothing and refreshing it’s best known as a tension-relieving oil. The sage oil is reputed to eliminate toxins and ease any muscular or joint pain. Camomile is a gentle yet potent botanical that aids sleep. Finally, the Ylang-yang adds an exotic note to boost mood and alleviate anxiety.

Other ingredients, besides essential oils, are farnesol which is present in many essential oils and is used to emphasise a sweet, floral scent. Linalool is naturally occurring, found in the essential oils, and is floral and spicy terpene alcohol. It’s found in over 200 plants acting as an anti-stress and soothing ingredient. Geraniol, when used topically, is an anti-inflammatory with antibacterial properties to purify and soothe. Eugenol is naturally occurs in botanicals like cloves, basil, and bay leaves and is used as a natural fragrance. Benzyl salicylate, benzyl benzoate, benzyl alcohol citronellol and limonene are all naturally occurring in botanicals and act as a fragrance or preservatives in cosmetic products.

Nursem – Caring Hand Cream & Caring Hand Fix

NurseM3psd.jpg

Something during these pandemic times it has become second nature to us is to keep washing our hands. Of course, after constant washing, most of us at The Amazing Blog have noticed irritation, dryness and cracked skin. However, let us just take a moment to consider what everyday life must be like for nurses who are on the frontline. Did you know that the average ICU nurse washes their hands 150 times a day? Which results in 85% suffering from painful and sore hands. Not anymore, step forward the new British brand Nursem who has created a specific range of solution-based hand care.

Nursem is a skincare brand, created by Jonny Philp who teamed up with his wife, Antonia (an ICU nurse), to create a range of special hand care products. As Jonny commented: “Our aim is to make every working day better for all hardworking hands, so we’ve developed a range of products that are formulated to care for, hydrate and replenish your skin’s natural defences.”  What testifies to this brand’s success is that its products are loved by nurses, mums and many more. We met Nursem at the CEW Showcases and were so thrilled to be given both their Caring Hand Fix, and Caring Hand Cream to try out.

Let’s start with the Caring Hand Fix which is a cruelty-free, vegan and dermatologist approved. This works like a healing balm (although it’s a cream) it’s intensive care for hands where it soothes and calms. It’s fragrance-free with the main ingredient of calming colloidal oatmeal, this works together for layers of protection with avocado oil, shea butter and glycerin to help minimise moisture loss from the skin. Avocado oil is known for its healing benefits on skin, rich in vitamin E and other nutrients it nourishes the skin to accelerate the healing process. While shea butter is an ingredient known for softening the skin and it also has anti-inflammatory properties. The Caring Hand Fix soothes redness and irritation, as well as regenerates the skin using a blend of pro-vitamin B5, naturally derived hyaluronic acid and allantoin. We think that using the product overnight probably brings the best results.  To purchase click here The product comes at a size of 50 ml for £14.99.

Next, the Caring Hand Cream that has been created by using natural ingredients. The Caring Hand Cream’s key ingredient here is medical-grade manuka honey, which is known to help aid the healing of sore hands and improve the skin’s appearance. The manuka honey can balance the skin’s pH levels and remove the dead cells, leaving the skin soft and clean. The Caring Hand Cream has a subtle scent similar to orange water which comes from the combination of citrus and bergamot. It also has an extract of white willow and oils such as grape seed, coconut, passionflower and pomegranate seed all of which help soften the hands. To purchase the 75 ml size for £9.99 click here. To purchase the 300 ml size for £19.99 click here. This is a long-lasting and effective formula for sore and dry hands.

Both of the products contain no parabens, mineral oil or silicone and we think are a must-have for everyone who has over washed hands that are suffering. What is also important to mention, is that Nursem has a ‘giving back’ philosophy and for every product sold, they offer a month’s worth of free Nursem to a nurse or a midwife. Please help us to keep this mission going by purchasing their hand care products here.

Alvarez Gomez - Agua de Colonia Concentrada

As someone who loves a great refreshing aftershave or cologne, those lovely girls at The Amazing Blog have been sourcing me some great new signature smells to go forth into the summer. I told them to find me something light, breezy and a classic fragrance to boot. They bobbed up with Agua de Colonia Concentrada from the Spanish fragrance brand Alvarez Gomez  In fact, they’ve actually written about their Flores Mediterrneas collection here, so I was curious to try the Agua de Colona Concentrada find for me…

Agua de Colonia Concentrada is a timeless classic cologne and is one of the first fragrances created by the Spanish fragrance house Alvarez Gomez in 1912.  Now with its fourth family generation of owners, this company is a global name with over 100 years of experience in the fragrance sector, well-known for its quality and distinctive traditional fragrances. And as they say about this cologne, “it’s a product that has survived the intense competition of fashion and is knows no age, gender or time…” You’ll often find their fragrances in top 5-star Spanish hotels, showcasing their stylish art deco bottles and sitting in pride of place on many washroom shelves.

This cologne is somewhat zesty and fresh with prominent lemon citrus that really lifts up the fragrance to set it apart from the others. The other top notes are geranium and lavender (two varieties here Spanish and English!) both of which add a little piquant. The middle notes of rosemary and thyme give a more mellow sweet and sour quality to the fragrance followed by the base notes of aromatic bergamot and lavender. This Agua de Colonia Concentrada perfectly captures the scents of the Mediterranean. What I particularly like is their Travel Kit which offers a selection of cologne, deodorant, body lotion and shower gel all for just £34. If you’d like to try Alvarez Gomez - Agua de Colonia Concentrada, it can be purchased here for £30 for 300 ml.  This is definitely topping the list for my go-to summer fragrance must-haves - in fact, it’s a ‘must-have’ for any time of year!

Berrichi For Men – Smoothing Age Defence

I’m always a bit flummoxed when it comes to choosing my own skincare, which is why I turn the trusted team at The Amazing Blog to give me a bit of direction. My wish-list isn’t always easy and this time I requested a face cream that would be light enough to absorb quickly, offer excellent protection against the elements, and also must be gentle enough not sting straight after shaving. A tall order indeed! They suggested For Men - Smoothing Age Defence from an award-winning Estonian skincare Berrichi where they recently reviewed their Day Age Defence and Night Power Defence here.

Founded by Berit Joosep, the brand started life with its artisan skincare in Joosep’s kitchen, where she drew inspiration from books on herbal culture and ancient beauty techniques. Today Berrichi is a multi-award-winning skincare brand (see The Beauty Shortlist Editor’s Choice Award here) it has expanded worldwide and is recognised for leading the way with ‘clean beauty’ and its unique botanicals.

This Smoothing Age DefenceI was reliably informed, is a 24-hour high-performance anti-ageing skincare with unique Estonian ingredients. Reading more about their range Berrichi’s For Men, I discovered that their skincare has powerful algae-based antioxidants with astaxanthin and furchellaran which helps kick into action hydration, protection from UV radiation and slows down skin ageing. Well, that’s ticked off most of my asks! The other key ingredients here are organic oils from avocado and jojoba; plus the addition of apricot kernel, cacay nut oils and aloe vera leaf juice. The quote on their stylish black box also brought a wry smile to my lips: “Age might not bring you wisdom, age brings you wrinkles….” Having put this wonder cream to the test, it performed exceptionally well and had the advantages of being fragrance-free and light as a feather. It comes in an airtight pump bottle, is free from parabens, sulphates and is vegan, natural, organic and cruelty-free. Impressed? Then purchase your 50 ml bottle for 39€ here.

Jinmee - Hydrapuff

Have you found yourself with more product on your hands than on your actual face? At The Amazing Blog we certainly have, and it’s just such a waste! Meet Jinmee who have pioneered a new way of thinking about cleansing with something sustainable, practical, and high quality. They have developed a product called Hydrapuff, the new super absorbent skincare sheets.

Founded by Karen Hong and produced in Korea, Jinmee was created when she realised the amount of product wasted on hands or cotton pads particularly as these thick pads soak up more product than it is actually applying to your skin.  She came up with these clever Hydrapuff sheets which are super thin and multi-purpose. They hydrate the skin, maximise product use, reduce waste, she came up with the Hydrapuff, as an affordable and high-quality product that works through simplicity, honesty, and self-care.

Hydrapuff are super-absorbent skincare sheets that come in a double-layered sheet. For the first step of your routine, keep your Hydrapuff intact, folded in half to give it extra thickness, it can be used with all your favourite skincare products. These sheets not only hydrate the skin but also as mentioned reduce the wastage. Once you add a skincare product to a sheet, it transforms into a gel-like tissue that adapts to your skin, which means applying the entire product onto your skin, not on the cottonwool or bin! You can apply your choice of toner, cream cleanser or oils, start by cleansing your face with the Hydrapuff sheet and your chosen product, and then gently wipe away your makeup or daily grim. Hydrapuff can also serve as a mask, by applying a serum or product onto the sheet and split the Hydrapuff in the middle. Then, place with your product on cheeks or the desired area allowing it to sit for 5 to 10 minutes (remove them before they get dry), pat your skin gently and done!

Hydrapuff is suitable for all skin types, made from a natural rayon and pulp blend with 60 sheets in a box. The sheets are vegan, cruelty-free, bio-degradable with recyclable packaging,  making them tick all the boxes and getting the thumbs up from us. We loved this multifunctional product which has saved us up to 50% less waste with our serums, cleansers and toners. Get your Hydrapuff here for only £6.50.
