Hotel Chocolat

Our Spooky Picks for this Halloween

This time of year is always crazy with the holidays quickly approaching and a bitter cold winter around the corner, but today is the one day of the year where you can dress in crazy costumes and acceptably eat as much candy as you desire. A day filled with spooky ghosts and blood-drinking vampires, Halloween is a fun treat for all to kickoff the start of the holiday season. To get into the Halloween spirit, we at The Amazing blog have found some fun themed goodies that will be sure to add some excitement to this unforgettable day of the year.

The American drinks brand, Royal Crown Cola, has launched a limited edition drink for this spooky holiday. The Dracola is a fizzy blood-red drink that is perfect for any Halloween party. Not only is the drink appropriately themed, but the label of the bottle is glow in the dark to give a twilight effect. You can get a 2 litre bottle of this “fang-tastic fizz” for only £1. You can even mix the drink with other delicious ingredients to create a Dracola ice-cream float or even to make a bowl of punch. The drink can be purchased at over 217 Asda stores throughout the UK.

Whether you’re celebrating Halloween or Mexico’s Day of the Dead, why not pick up one of Alhambra’s festive skull cushions. It is believed that the origins of Halloween trace back to the Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts believed that the spirits of the dead would return at this time of celebration. Today, although the holiday is much more about wearing scary costumes to “ward off ghosts” than it is reflecting about the dead, these cushions are a fun way to decorate your home. Alhambra’s colourful skull cushions are inspired by this holiday as well as Mexico’s Day of the Dead. They have a range of designs to choose from. The cushion covers are £14.50 plus p&p and the stuffed pillows retail from £18.50. The cushions can be found at their website here.

One of our favourite beauty products from LUSH fresh handmade cosmetics is their Twilight shower gel. A big part of Halloween is all of the fun treats sold in stores. We came across this cute bag of chocolates from Hotel Chocolat. The Little Bag of Horrors includes Zingy Zombie Eye Truffles, a chocolate ghost, and a Tiddly vampire. The Little Bag of Horrors retails for £6.50. You can purchase this spooky bag of chocolates from their website here. Hotel Chocolats also offers other Halloween related candy for purchase on their website. Chocs Away!

With the sudden drop in temperature, dark nights approaching and the arrival of October, it’s fair to say that our alleged Indian Summer has swiftly departed. Thus winter awaits; and while I’m not thrilled at the prospect of frost-bitten hands, stone-cold feet and dark mornings, I’m certainly excited about digging out my chunky knits, fur lined gillets and wrap dresses. My favourite thing about my winter wardrobe? The fact that unlike my summer attire, it’s far more forgiving. So by way of celebrating, I am planning on fully indulging in Chocolate Week – beginning on Monday.

Kindly funded by the lovely people at The Ecuador Tourist Office, Divine Chocolate, Thorntons and Hotel Chocolat, a whole host of exciting events will be taking place over the week – guaranteed to provide chocolate-lovers nationwide with a little something to tantalise their taste-buds!

And the highlight of the week is the fabulously decadent celebration of chocolate - Chocolate Unwrapped – a show taking place over the 15th and 16th of October. With a range of chocolate sculptures on display, including Paul Wayne Gregory’s three-foot high chocolate doll’s house, cooking demonstrations and a whole host of tastings, there really is something for everyone, whether you want to admire from afar or really get to grips with all the culinary delights on offer. In particular the Great Chocolate Cake Off promises to provide even the most glutenous of participants with a serious chocolate treat. With each cake entry being judged on texture, appearance and most importantly taste, and 30 contenders vying for first prize, it’s certainly a job I wouldn’t turn down.

With the opportunity to see chocolate being made in a minature chocolate factory, top chocolatier William Curley demonstrating recipes from his new book, Couture Chocolate, and Thorntons Master Chocolatier hosting tastings of the Centenary Collection, it really is a celebration of all things indulgent.

So, what are you waiting for? Visit the National Chocolate Week website for tickets and give in to the ever deadly sin of temptation...

Chocolate Unwrapped takes place at Vinopolis (Stoney Street, London, SE1 9BU)
